MADD

Today, I decided that I am going to do my Marketplace of Ideas on the topic of Drunk Driving. Drunk driving is unfortunately a big problem throughout our society, and I found some very informative articles and websites regarding this topic. Exploring the MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) website gave me a lot of information and statistics about drunk driving as well as ways to get involved in the fight to help eliminate the problem of drunk driving. I learned a lot about Ignition Interlock devices. These devices are devices that are used in automobiles for DUI offenders that requires them to pass a breathalyzer test prior to their car starting. I am a huge advocate for the Ignition Interlock devices because I think that it is a nearly fool-proof way to eliminate the possibility of people drunk driving and it allows our streets to be safer. Currently, Illinois is one of the 14 states that requires the instilation of an Ignition Interlock device after being convicted of DUI. MADD has many campaigns and petitions for people to sign in order to urge representatives of the other 36 states to begin to follow in the footsteps of Illinois and the other 13 states that have these types of laws. In my opinion, this is something that all 50 states should have in place. Drunk driving is a serious problem. According to the MADD website, in this recent year in Illinois, there have been 49,527 3 time offenders, 5,659 5 time offenders, and 319 DUI fatalities. A huge amount, 35% of all traffic deaths are DUI related, something that is completely avoidable if people were to make good decisions and refrain from driving under the influence.

In addition to the information regarding the Ignition Interlock devices, the MADD website has a large amount of information regarding the fight to eliminate drunk driving and different campaigns that MADD sponsors.
All of this information that I found was from the MADD website. The links are below..
